UNCOMMON FRIENDS FOUNDATION TO HONOR FIVE EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATORS
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Oct. 11, 2005) – In recognition of the valuable
lessons they teach and the examples they set, five Lee County teachers
will receive the 2005 Character Education Awards from the Uncommon Friends
Foundation at a banquet in their honor on November 1st. The five are chosen
in recognition of the way they use the Uncommon Friends Foundation's “Lessons
Learned from the Uncommon Friends” curriculum in their classrooms,
and because they live those lessons themselves in their respective schools
and communities every day.
“These are the teachers we all want our children, our grandchildren and our neighbors’ children to have,” said Tom Hoolihan, President of the Uncommon Friends Foundation. “We praise them for their work and for the examples they set for others and look forward to honoring them in person on November 1st.” The 2005 recipients are; Virginia Harper, Cape Coral High School; Lillian Howell, Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School: Jan Maxwell, North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts; Karen Rubin, Fort Myers High School; and Donna Snyder, Allen Park Elementary School.
The Foundation conducts teacher workshops to introduce the curriculum to teachers in Southwest Florida and throughout the state. The lessons promote character education, leadership and ethics qualities that James D. Newton wrote about in his book “Uncommon Friends.” The five uncommon friends of Jim Newton were Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Dr. Alexis Carrel and Charles Lindbergh.
The awards presentation will take place at the Royal Palm Yacht Club in Fort Myers, on Tuesday, November 1st. Sponsors for this event are Owen Ames Kimball Construction and First Home Builders of Florida.
