BE INSPIRED!

 Scholarship Awards Program

The Foundation is dedicated to enriching society by promoting the positive values author Jim Newton discovered in five unique men and their wives, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Dr. Alexis Carrel, and Charles Lindbergh, intellectual giants who helped shape the Twentieth Century.

Newton dubbed them his "Uncommon Friends" and wrote about his experiences with and the knowledge and insight he gained from them in a book of the same name.

THE UNCOMMON FRIENDS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS recognize deserving people who have a financial need, the potential to succeed in school and who demonstrate the personal traits of the Uncommon Friends.

THE POSITIVE VALUES OF THE UNCOMMON FRIENDS:
Honesty, personal integrity, self-control, courage, commitment, compassion, citizenship, respect, a sense of purpose, responsibility, spirit of adventure, perseverance, business ethics, personal growth, friendship and personal initiative.

PHILOSOPHY:
To inspire in others the same spirit of adventure, sense of purpose and capacity for growth that was evident in the lives of those described in the book Uncommon Friends, authored by James D. Newton.

Nomination forms are mailed in January/February of each year to social service agencies, and schools and colleges.  Scholarships are awarded annually in the late spring. To be included on this mailing list, please contact the Foundation office.

The scholarship program began with a generous gift from Mrs. Berne Davis in memory of her late husband, civic and business leader Sidney R. Davis. Mrs. Davis has continued to make major gifts annually to the scholarship program. Many other generous donors also support the scholarship program each year. All donors, no matter what size their gift, help to improve the lives of others and subsequently the community. Donor support is always needed and appreciated. Expanding the scholarship program to reach even more deserving men and women is a foundation goal.
